NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Demonstrating the impact of the company’s commitment to its people and customers, John Laing Homes earned dual honors from the home building industry’s leading publications in August. Housing Giants magazine named Larry Webb its inaugural CEO of the Year while John Laing Homes was ranked No. 3 in Professional Builder magazine’s “Best Workplaces” employee survey.
According to Paul Deffenbaugh, the editorial director of Housing Giants, Webb was chosen because he distinguished himself through superior “leadership, innovation, proven performance, and community involvement.” The magazine’s staff solicited nominations from people throughout the industry, and also conducted their own research. “We looked at the performance of the CEO's company within the context of the present market. In addition, we researched – through public records and media reports, as well as personal interviews – efforts the CEOs had made in the areas listed above. Ultimately, everyone thought Larry was a superior selection for our first CEO of the Year,” said Deffenbaugh. “To be recognized as CEO of the year by your peers in the industry and the journalists that follow home building as their profession is certainly a humbling experience,” said Webb. “But in my mind, the CEO of the Year award is more of a reflection of the hard work and creativity of all our people at John Laing Homes. It makes me extremely proud that our people felt strongly enough about our company to vote us one of 2007’s Best Workplaces.”
John Laing Homes ranked No. 3 in Professional Builder magazine’s Best Workplaces 2007 survey, but the company was the highest ranked company with revenues exceeding $1 billion and ranked first in both “satisfaction with opportunities for personal growth and development” and for “policies and programs that help employees balance work and personal life responsibilities.”
The publication solicited responses to a comprehensive 32-question survey from 1,600 employees at 81 different companies to determine its annual “Best Workplaces” ranking. Survey questions covered compensation and benefits; professional development, education and training; recruitment and retention; job satisfaction, workplace culture and environment; social and corporate responsibility; customer service; and leadership ability of top management.
“As I have said before, my job is to make sure the right people are in place, lay the philosophic foundation, and get out of the way,” said Webb. “We have created an environment where great people can do the best work of their lives…and have too!”
