Breaking Ground in Port Hueneme!
| The City name of Port Hueneme (pronounced “port why-NEE-mee”) derives from the Chumash word “wene me” meaning resting place. On Friday December 1, 2006 , the calm winds, clear blue sky and warm sun truly reflected the meaning of Port Hueneme as residents, retired Mayor Anthony Volante and many public officials joined John Laing Homes to celebrate groundbreaking for the communities Beach House & Sea Glass. The groundbreaking event symbolized the end of a long 3 year journey by the City, Hueneme residents and Native American Chumash to bring much needed housing to the City and preserve a precious cultural resource. Together these communities will provide 150 new homes 9 of which will be donated to the City for its affordable housing program and include a memorial park that will forever preserve a piece of Chumash cultural history. Guests in attendance signed an enlarged version of the Ground Breaking Invitation which will be placed in a capsule and buried upon final completion of the park, to be called “Wenemu Park”. After enjoying brunch and speeches from Mayor Volante and our Divison President Bill Rattazzi, the event was concluded with a Chumash blessing ceremony of Wenemu Park by Chumash representative Julie Tumamait. | Community Organizations and Charities We Support |
